A baby caring ultrasound scan has been used on pregnant women for many years and has proven to be an important diagnostic tool in picking up possible complications during gestation and an effective tool to check for baby gender. And it’s always exciting to get that very first pick of your beautiful baby. Your doctor may ask for an ultrasound at any time during your pregnancy, for many different reasons.
A baby caring ultrasound scan may be performed around 7 to 8 weeks of pregnancy. This scan is performed to help the mother to check the fetus to see any irregularities in the pregnancy but this test cannot be used to see the sex of the baby yet. If the expectant mother is experiencing excessive cramping or bleeding, a doctor may recommend an emergency ultrasound scan just to make sure that everything is okay with mother and unborn child.
Mid-pregnancy, or the second trimester, is when most ultrasounds typically take place. Ob/Gyns order a baby care ultrasound scan at this time, commonly referred to as anomaly scans, to check on the development of the fetus and ascertain that everything is growing according to schedule. Performed around 20 weeks along, this is also when the technician may be able to determine the sex of the baby with some degree of accuracy. Don’t get your hopes too high though, awkward positions sometimes prevent the sex from being detected. Either way, the day of your second trimester baby care ultrasound scan is likely to be the day you receive your baby’s first picture.
A baby care ultrasound scan administered after 28 weeks of pregnancy are usually referred to as growth scans and are used mostly to guard against complications. Common high-risk situations include multiple-babies, previous premature births, ages under 15 or over 35 or excessive weight. Any of these factors can pose serious health problems for the mother or fetus and will probably require weekly or semi-weekly scans for the duration of the third trimester. Sometimes a 3D or 4D baby care ultrasound scan will be performed in order to get the most detailed view possible.
